161 Years Ago: Jefferson F. Lanier
Jefferson F. Lanier joined Company I of the 13th Regiment of the Alabama Confederate Infantry on 19 July 1861. He was reported as “absent, sick or dead” for the muster period January and February 1862 and as “absent, sick” for March and April 1862. For the muster period 31 August 1862 to 1 January 1863, he was reported as “absent, supposed to be dead, not heard from since May 62.”
Jefferson’s service records do not include a date of death or any information about how and where he died. But a Confederate grave marker for a Jefferson F. Lanier, who was born on 3 November 1838 and died on 29 May 1862, is in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
That birth date matches Jefferson’s birth date listed in a family Bible, so it appears this marker is for him. Based on the photo on Find a Grave, which was taken in 2019, the marker was relatively new at that time. The accuracy of the death date and whether or not he was actually buried at Hollywood Cemetery is undetermined, but his service record supports that he probably died around that time. Disease rather than injury was likely the cause of his death.
