250 Years Ago: Dabney Carr
Dabney Carr, son of John Carr and Barbara Overton, died on 16 May 1773 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dabney was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson even before he married Jefferson’s sister, Martha, in 1765.
Carr and Jefferson studied together was under the shade of a favorite oak at Monticello. They made a promise to each other that the survivor would see that the other was buried at the foot of that tree.
When Dabney became ill with a fever, he could not be moved home. Jefferson was absent from Charlottesville when he died, and Dabney was initially buried there in Shadwell Cemetery. But Jefferson had his body disinterred and re-buried beneath that favorite oak on Monticello. Dabney was the first person buried in the Monticello Cemetery.
