Feature: Nancy Jane Bennett
168 Years Ago: Nancy Jane Bennett was born on 17 July 1852 in Georgia. Her youngest son, James Doffin Lanier, gave that date when he provided the personal information for Nancy Jane’s death certificate in 1926.1Georgia Department of Public Health, death certificate 24347 (1926), Mrs. Nancy Jane Lanier; digital image, Georgia Archives, “Georgia Death Certificates,” Virtual Vault (https://vault.georgiaarchives.org/ : accessed 17 Nov 2007). But her son, John William McCauley, claimed she was born on the 27th.2Funeral Book for Verda Waller Hankins McCauley, 1942; privately held by A. J. Zigler; copy of pages held by Linda McCauley, Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. Which date, if either, is correct? I don’t know, but Will hadn’t seen his mother for many years when she died, so I’m leaning toward James’ date given on her death certificate being more likely accurate. Nancy Jane was the daughter of John T. Bennett and Martha Gamble.3Georgia death certificate 24347 (1926), Mrs. Nancy Jane Lanier. (*Great-grandmother, McCauley)
