29 Years Ago: Dorothy Louise Dial
Dorothy Louise Dial Collier Chevalier Chessher died on 2 February 1994 in Metairie, Louisiana, which is in Jefferson Parish. She was three weeks from turning 87 years old. Dorothy was buried in St. Louis #3 Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Dorothy was born on 24 February 1907 in Mississippi to John Calvin Dial and Sarah Belle Lanier. Her parents went by Doc and Sallie.
Finding even a trace of John Calvin Dial has been impossible to date. The family story is that Sallie and Doc eloped to Louisiana in 1906, while the family lived in Natchez, Mississippi. They were living in a logging camp when Sallie’s father came to get her, saying that was no place for a woman. He took Sallie home and had the marriage annulled, but she was already pregnant with Dorothy.
None of that story can be backed up with documentation except that Sallie and Dorothy went by Dial (misspelled Dil) according to the 1910 census. At that time, they lived with Sallie’s sister, Lillie and her husband Jesse Walls in Atlanta. Sallie and Lillie’s mother also lived with them. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 (likely closer to 1910), Sallie married Frank M. Cooksey and moved to New York City. She left Dorothy with her mother and sister.
Dorothy was married three times and had four children. Her husbands were Jack William Collier, George W. Chevalier, and Floyd Chessher. She lived in Atlanta and New Orleans.
