Documenting the Details

This Week in the Family History: February 9–15

February 9, 2020

Feature: William Washington Lanier

128 Years Ago: William Washington Lanier probably died 11 February 1892 in Fredonia, Chambers County, Alabama. That is the date on his headstone in New Hope Baptist Cemetery at Fredonia.1 An entry in a family Bible originally owned by William’s grandson, William Larkin Lanier, states he died on 28 January 1892.2

I have no idea who entered the family information in that Bible. The same person wrote most of the entries about the family, including information about William, his wife, and their children, likely at the same time. The latest date written in that hand-writing is 26 September 1910. So the information about William was likely written at least eighteen years after he died. The headstone is old and could have been created nearer the time of his death, but I can’t say for certain which date (if either) is correct. (*2nd Great-grandfather, McCauley)

February 9

89 Years Ago: Cova Henry Howard died 9 February 1931 in Harlan County, Kentucky. He was buried in Old Creech Cemetery at Wallins. Henry was the son of John Covey Howard and Mary F. Morris. (*2nd Great-uncle, Hopkins)

February 12

128 Years Ago: Sarah A. Ramsey Taylor died 12 February 1892 in Mt. Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky at about twenty-four years old. Her burial location is unknown. Sally was the daughter of Goldman P. Ramsey and Serena Green and the wife of John Cook Taylor. (*1st Wife of Great-grandfather, Taylor)

February 13

99 Years Ago: Josiah Love Taylor died 13 February 1921, probably in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. He was buried in Ramsey-Taylor Cemetery at Renfro Valley in Rockcastle County. Joe was the son of James Francis Taylor and Margaret E. Ramsey. (*2nd Great-uncle, Taylor)

140 Years Ago: Thomas Richard Hankins was born 13 February 1880 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. He was the son of Thomas Leander Hankins and Samantha Angeline Petty. (*Great-uncle, Hankins)

168 Years Ago: Martha Ramsey Taylor died 13 February 1852 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. She is buried in Ramsey-Hiatt Cemetery at Renfro Valley in Rockcastle County. Patsy was the daughter of Thomas Ramsey, Sr. and Martha and the wife of William Taylor. (*3rd Great-grandmother, Taylor)

February 14

56 Years Ago: Susan Taylor Krueger died 14 February 1964 in Mt. Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Susie was the daughter of John Cook Taylor and Sarah Ramsey and the widow of August Krueger. (*Great-aunt, Taylor)

February 15

139 Years Ago: John Petty married Elizabeth Inman 15 February 1881 in Whitfield County, Georgia. Elizabeth was John’s second or third wife. She was not the mother of his children. John’s parents are unknown. (*3rd Great-grandfather, Hankins)

157 Years Ago: Twins Martha and Mary Bennett were born 15 February 1863 in Georgia, probably Heard County. They were the daughters of John T. Bennett and Martha Gamble. (*2nd Great-aunts, McCauley)

176 Years Ago: Sarah Fox Hankins married James Matthews 15 February 1844 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. Sarah was the daughter of Titus Fox and Elizabeth Wright and the widow of Barnabas Hankins. (*4th Great-grandmother, Hankins)
