Feature: John T. Bennett
189 Years Ago: John T. Bennett was born 7 February 1831 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.1 John was the son of Lewis H. Bennett and Teresa.2 The Bennetts settled in Troup County, Georgia before 1840, probably around 1834.3 Many researchers think Lewis was the Lewis Bennett listed in the 1830 census in Darlington County, South Carolina, but that household’s composition doesn’t match. Lewis and Teresa had two children born before 1830 and Darlington County Lewis’ household was only one man 20-30 and one woman 20-30.4
The information John gave about his birthplace on the 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers is the only clue to where they lived before moving to Georgia. Nothing further has been found to date.
