John Corum Hankins was born on 22 December 1893 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.1“U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918,” images, Ancestry.com (https://ancestry.com), John Corum Hankins. He was the fifth of Thomas Leander Hankins and Samantha Angeline Petty’s seven children. 

He married Gertie Tapp on 28 December 1910 in Hopkins County.2Hopkins County, Kentucky, Marriage Records, 1910-1911: 52, Hankins-Tapp, 1910; microfilm 7017360, item 3, Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, Frankfort. Gertie was the daughter of Abner Tapp and Amanda W. Riddle. She was born on 8 August 1887 in Kentucky, probably in Hopkins County.3“Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1965,” image, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 4 Sep 2013), Gertie Hankins, 14187 (1925). 

John and Gertie had three children, all born in Hopkins County. Helen Lee was born on 25 August 1913.4Gertie Tapp Hankins Bible, The New Testament (New York: American Bible Society, 1914), Births; privately held by S. M. London, Arizona. William Perry was born on 24 August 1916 and lived less than three months. John registered for the World War I draft on 5 June 1917. His physical description was tall, and slender with brown eyes and hair. His occupation was farmer, and he was self employed.7“U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918,” John Corum Hankins. 

At the time of the 1920 U.S. Census, John and Gertie lived on Hanson Road in Hopkins County, which is north of Madisonville. John died on 7 September 1923 in Madisonville at age twenty-nine and was buried in Grapevine Cemetery next to their son.9“Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1965,” image, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 4 Sep 2013), John C. Hankins, 23559 (1923).  Gertie lived less than two years after John’s death. She died on 13 June 1925 in Hopkins County and was also buried in Grapevine Cemetery.10“Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1965,” Ancestry.com, Gertie Hankins, 14187 (1925).  Their children, Helen and Jewell, went to live with John’s parents.
