The older I get, the faster time seems to move. And 2015 went by in a blur.
Has it really been 11 months since I was getting ready to head to Salt Lake City for FGS 2015 and a few extra days of researching at the Family History Library? Has it really been seven months since I took a research trip to Alabama looking for the still elusive Theodocia and spent a week in “Research in the South” at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR)? Has it really been over four months since I boarded Jewel of the Seas with the FGS cruisers for a week of genealogy in Alaska? Those trips and other milestones seem more like they were just a few weeks ago.
Six years ago (December 29, 2009 to be exact), I took the plunge into genealogy blogging. I’m not sure I can still consider myself a blogger. That one lone post in 2015 certainly wasn’t what I had in mind this time last year, but things happened. Things that derailed me completely.
The best thing about a blog is that it’s still there even when you aren’t. I received dozens of emails during 2015 from people who found a connection here. Some led to exciting discoveries. I should blog about those.
As 2016 starts, I again have good intentions—not only for this blog but for research and other writing that also suffered from neglect in 2015. I’m resurrecting “This Week in the Family History,” a weekly post highlighting people who were born, married, or died on those dates. Since the year starts today, the first in that series will be posted later today then it will move to Sundays starting January 10.
My blogging goal is for one other post a week. Success with that will be directly related to how much research happens. My research goals start with, well, researching. I have identified the genealogical questions I’d most like to answer. In a few days, I’m headed to Salt Lake City to start working on them. The Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) and the “Advanced DNA Analysis Techniques for Genealogical Research” course is also on my agenda for that trip. DNA has already answered some questions and validated a few conclusions for me. I expect it will help answer more in 2016.
We’ll see how it goes.
Happy New Year!
Good luck with your endeavors, I’m looking forward to your posts.
It doesn’t seem possible that time can go so fast but like you, I’ve discovered it can and does. I had planned to really examine my McCauley line in 2015 to see if there was any way to connect them with William Bailey, husband of Laura Ann McCauley, but it didn’t happen. DNA led me down 2 different branches and I didn’t get back to the McCauleys. Maybe next year 😉
