This is one of my favorite pictures of my grandfather, John William McCauley because I can see his face and he looks happy. In most pictures, he looks a bit stern, and he is often wearing a hat that obscures part of his face.
Also pictured are his daughter Jimmie Nell McCauley Knight (left) and his wife’s niece Helen Hankins Morgan (center).
This picture is from a photo album that belonged to James Bailey Hankins and is held by one of my cousins. Uncle Jimmy was the brother of my grandmother Verda who died more than 10 years before this gathering. I don’t believe Uncle Jimmy was there. Other pictures from this day accumulated from this album and other family members don’t include him. Since Uncle Jimmy was the center of attention when he visited his nieces and nephews, he’d be in some pictures.
I’m not sure where this picture was taken, but it was likely a park in Hopkins County, Kentucky, or possibly in Muhlenberg County about 1953.1 Several of Will and Verda’s children and grandchildren were at this gathering along with Verda and Jimmy’s nieces, Helen (pictured) and Garah Hankins Gamblin and their families. No doubt it was held for Helen to see her cousins while visiting Kentucky from Arizona.
